Acetone Cleanup

Matt Long My tip of the day, real simple and easy: Acetone. Acetone is the most amazing cleanup… This is one that John did cleaning — he had all kinds of cleaning products — well, this one’s real specific. I first discovered it when… I don’t throw anything away…

Adam You were trying to clean your fingernails?

Matt Long That’s right. First of all, I’ll get to the fingernail polish. But the whiteboards… Now, I’m sure nobody… Does anybody even use whiteboards anymore?

Adam Check the calendar, dude.

Matt Long That’s why I pull them out of the dumpster. You know, people throw them away because they’d get marks on them, and you get that little eraser thing, and it never quite gets them all off, right? Acetone makes them like new.

Adam It doesn’t burn off some layer or anything?

Matt Long No — it might burn off some brain cells. Use it under…

Adam Don’t sniff it.

Matt Long Use it well ventilated. Your wife will probably — or maybe some of your children — are buying fingernail polish remover, which by the way is about 70 to 80 percent acetone. So they water it down and add a little bit of perfume to it, and you’re paying like six or seven dollars for a four- to eight-ounce bottle of acetone. You can get a quart. And actually the price of acetone has gone up, and I’m wondering if it has anything to do with the war.

Adam Can I drive my car on acetone?

Matt Long You probably could. But it’s also good for — you can restock your wife’s fingernail polish remover. Just dilute it a little bit. You know, 20–30% dilution.

Adam With water?

Matt Long With water, yeah. And if you’re a penny pincher like me, I did check the most recent price on acetone is about $12 a quart.

Adam I’m living down by the river in a van with a quart of acetone and government cheese.

Matt Long It’ll get sticker gunk off of stuff. So if you pull off a sticker — I had a shirt that I put my “I voted” sticker on, and it went through the washer. And so it has this oval of the “I voted” left on it. But hey, acetone, a little bit of elbow grease, that pops right off.

Adam It didn’t fade the color of the rest of the shirt?

Matt Long No didn’t do anything to it. It’ll take it right off.

Coming up Christmas time, gift time — I hate that. I think it’s so tacky to see the half-pulled-off sticker on the gift, and then you try to scrape it off with your fingernail. No — go get the acetone.

Adam I love it. It’s an excellent tip of the day. Get yourself a quart of acetone, $12. It is beautiful.
