John: All right, we’re back to wine and food. One more tip. This is a website that I use a lot, and it’s a cheap trick. You’re buying wine and want to know if the wine’s any good. What are you going to do?
You go to Wine Searcher.
Adam: Can I just say something? I am getting complaints. Sir Gene was recently at a dinner, texted a picture of the wine list to me. He says, “John no longer responds.”
John: I missed it! I always respond. The phone was in the drawer. It should be sent to my email. I might be downstairs getting clips, or doing a lot of things. I’m sorry, Gene. But generally speaking, I take care of this.
So… Wine-searcher.com. This is a huge, monstrous database of wines—with all the reviews and all the stores that sell the wine.
So you just type in a wine at the top—say, Château Montrose 1990—and it gives you where it’s available, all the different prices from cheapest to most expensive.
Then you click on “Reviews.” It shows you all the known reviews, gives you summaries, star ratings—it even links to CellarTracker, which a lot of people love.
Adam: I have CellarTracker. The app.
John: Yeah, CellarTracker the app. It’s amateurs rating the wines.
Adam: That’s correct. Amateurs rating the wine, taking pictures of the label. The label even tells you what it should cost.
John: Right. But it also gives you the CellarTracker number. It’s dynamite. A godsend for anyone who buys wine.
Adam: And do you recommend that 1990 bottle you just mentioned? Is that like $8,000?
John: The 1990 Montrose?
Adam: Yeah, what does that cost me?
John: Oh, it’s not cheap.
Adam: But it’s the one at the top of your mind? Makes me wonder…
John: Well, it just popped into my head. I had it once in my life.
Adam: I’m thinking about André’s in a box, and John’s like, “Oh, the Montrose 1990, that’s what I’ll have.”
